{"id":3367,"date":"2015-10-15T19:24:36","date_gmt":"2015-10-15T19:24:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theswitch.us\/blog\/?p=3367"},"modified":"2015-11-11T23:31:40","modified_gmt":"2015-11-11T23:31:40","slug":"sting-like-designer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/switch.us\/blog\/sting-like-designer\/","title":{"rendered":"Sting Like a Designer"},"content":{"rendered":"<address>Design is at the heart of everything we do \u2013 from event production, to website development, to \u2026 well, ping pong tournaments.<\/address>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When Design Week comes around each September, we\u2019re reminded of the robust creative scene in our hometown of St. Louis, and we\u2019re fortunate to take advantage of inspiring panels, outlandish parties and unique opportunities to learn from each other.<\/p>\n<p>The Skunk\u2019d Ping Pong Palooza hosted by the kind folks at <a href=\"http:\/\/cometobrennans.net\/\">Brennan\u2019s<\/a> was no exception. New to 2015, this inaugural event merged two of our favorite things \u2013 design and ping pong \u2013 into an evening of pure, booze-fueled shenanigans and sheer athleticism. To be entered into the tourney, we had to submit a custom paddle design. Piece of cake.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theswitch.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/blake-pong-champion.jpg\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"blake-pong-champion\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Blake, our newest Associate Creative Director, who also just so happens to top the Switch leaderboard in Office Pong, had a methodical approach. \u201cI wanted to create a paddle that not only represents Switch, but also gives our agency a competitive edge,\u201d Blake explained. Using this logic as a starting point, Switch logo dots were re-imagined as white circles sized precisely at 40mm, replicating the exact size of ping pong balls.<\/p>\n<p>The Rising Sun motif, a subtle nod to Asian culture\u2019s domination in the table tennis landscape, also served as a potential distraction to the competitors. \u201cIndividually, these factors might not have had an impact,\u201d Blake said. \u201cBut put them all together, along with some strong ping pong skills, and the competition had no chance.\u201d And bonus points to Blake for proudly tying in brand elements.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theswitch.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Switch-pong-design.jpg\"  class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"Switch-pong-design\" width=\"700\" height=\"331\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>We Came, We Ponged, We Conquered<\/h1>\n<p>Naturally, Blake\u2019s design earned him a slot on the playing field \u2013 or rather, table. With a couple dozen people packed into the Skunk\u2019d Ping Pong Parlor in the basement of <a href=\"http:\/\/cometobrennans.net\/\">Brennan\u2019s Bottle Shop and Bar<\/a>, the tournament began. Long story short: Blake killed it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3374\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3374\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.theswitch.us\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/bruce-lee.gif\" alt=\"bruce-lee\" width=\"500\" height=\"341\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3374\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blake at the Skunk&#8217;d Ping Pong Tournament<\/p><\/div>\n<p>So we raise our bruised pong paddles to the St. Louis design community and especially to Brennan\u2019s for giving us yet another reason to anticipate Design Week 2016.
