With all the hype surrounding the new Spoon album (the very good They Want My Soul), I’m reminded how I got into Spoon to begin with: this achingly sad and beautiful video for “Everything Hits at Once” off their album Girls Can Tell. It was the first song marking their transition from Pixies rip-offs to what they’ve become since, but all I ever remember is how it sounded like they were speaking to me and me alone. In other words, perfect.

I’m watching The West Wing. Almost finished with Season 6. It’s the best show ever. You will wish President Bartlet were a real person. But I miss Rob Lowe.

I just finished reading Olive Kitteridge, a story of a little community in upstate Maine…filled with people who qualify as “intense” in a sort of modern version of Our Town – not so much a snapshot of small town America as it is a character study beautifully realized through 13 different persons and their messy little lives.
