Lately I’ve been jamming out to the old school, rough and raw tunes of a small country western group from southeast Missouri called the John D. Hale Band. This band really goes back to the roots of country music with his songs, and this is the main reason why I am such a huge fan. The new era of country music really has discouraged me, but if you look deep enough you can still find bands like these guys who just like to rock out. I like to think they are keeping the vibes and sounds of Waylon & Willie and “the boys” (Merle, Johnny, David Alan Coe and Kris) still alive. So if you ever get in a mood to drink whiskey from the bottle out by a fire in the back woods, I highly suggest you look up some John D., sit back and take in the stories he has to tell.

“Can We Talk?” In the midst of Joan Rivers’ passing last week, I ran across an essay she wrote a couple years ago for The Hollywood Reporter giving advice to fellow women comedians. In it, Ms. Rivers provided an honest reflection of her experiences as a budding female comedian, including the stark displays of sexism she experienced for decades. The sobering details of Rivers’ journey shine an adorning light on her honesty, perseverance and gender-defying achievements – and it gives all the more reason to appreciate her humor.
